About Japan Tsunami Relief (JTR)

As many of you are aware, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the northern coast of Japan on March 11, and the tsunami that followed shortly thereafter, has caused incalculable economic damage and has ended the lives of more than 15,000 people.  The Japanese government is currently coping with not only a severely damaged infrastructure, but also a Level 5 nuclear industrial disaster.  Currently hundreds of thousands of residents have been displaced as a result of this tragedy, with more evacuations possible if the conditions at the Fukushima Daiichi plant do not improve.

Japan Tsunami Relief (JTR) is an organization of students at the University of Wisconsin – Madison who want to provide support to those affected by the tsunami.  Since the incident, we have been organizing many fundraising events and collecting donations at various locations around campus and the city of Madison. A dollar or the change in your pocket can make people in Japan smile.  Even if it is difficult for you to donate money, we’d love for you to stop by and say hi.

About Our Donations

JTR officers have been working hard to figure out the best way to ensure that the money we raise reaches the Japanese people and communities who need it most, and that it reaches them as quickly as possible, while ensuring that we conform to U.S. laws. Because of this, JTR has chosen to donate all of the funds we receive through our events and collection tables directly to the American Red Cross (ARC) Badger Chapter.
There are several benefits of working with the ARC. First of all, by registering with the ARC, we can take the money that we collect to ARC on a daily basis, and the money will be sent immediately to Japan, and be available to the Japan Red Cross (JRC) within just one or two days. As you know, given the seriousness of the situation in the Tohoku area, time is of the essence!
Also, taking care of the finances becomes extremely easy through ARC. The money we collect will immediately go to the national branch of the ARC and they will work with JRC to handle it. The Badger Chapter will keep all accounting records for us and let us know periodically how much money we have raised.

Credibility

All the events through JTR will be posted on this page, and volunteers will have UW-Madison JTR sign with our official logo, boxes, and ID.  If you have any concerns about any of our activities on campus, please contact us at uwm.jtr@gmail.com
